ArEg SPEAKS Arabic!

too many CAPTCHA tries, you need to refresh!
No more latinised pronounciation! We are pleased to introduce Arabic Text Player 0.1 beta. Simply click on the Arabic word and listen to its pronounciation immediately! Arabic Text Player allows you to listen to each letter separately, when you click it, or to the whole word when you click any blank area.

The main technical requirement to enjoy Arabic Text Player is flash player 8 or higher. Although the text player was tested on serveral browsers/platforms, it is recommended to use Firefox web browser, it is clean, safe, and best of all: free!

To test whether you have the sufficient requirements to listen to the Arabic text, click the website name (ArEg) and listen to each letter:

If you cannot listen, click on button on the right and get your free copy of Firefox.

As the version name implies, the program is still under test (beta version), it is mainly suitable for listening to separate letters. Playing complete words and phrases is still quite noisy. Like all the components of ArEg , we rely on your continuous feedback to make it more and more useful.
It is important to put these notes into consideration while using the program:

  • Arabic Text Player is designed to pronounce standard Arabic, it will still work for the Egyptian text, but the pronunciation wont be precise. Our Egyptian Text Player is yet to come ;)
  • Arabic Text Player shows a phonetic representation of the text. The correct way to write the text is the one used in the lessons.

We hope this is a useful addition to our services, waiting for your comments!

Arabic speech synthesizer

I don't see speech synthesizer as a proper tool for learning languages. Even commercial speech synthesizer are not so good that those could be used as a teaching tool. Especially the Arabic speech synthesizer here is, quite frankly, horrible! Most of the sentences I listened without text I did not understood although I have been studying Arabic for some time now. I would bet that neither would a native Arabic speaker understand. It will be catastrophic if anyone who studies Arabic would use those as pronunciation guide. I suggest that you should remove it! And stop developing it because no matter how well it pronounces Arabic, It will never reach the level of native speaker, WHICH IS MANDATORY IN ORDER TO LEARN ARABIC!! In stead of using time for developing speech synthesizer I would suggest to start recording the words and sentences with a native speaker and use those.

RE: Arabic speech synthesizer

Actually using speech synthesis is the new trend in e-learning. The advantage is obvious: with TTS, a massive amount of phrases can be offered to the learner without much effort or cost, as opposed to recording each and every phrase. However, you have a point about the quality, it is currently poor in playing phrases, but it is acceptable when it comes to listening to a single character, which is something most beginners need. Therefore, I think the TTs feature should stay until an improved version of it is employed. We are considering very high quality TTS engines to employ, they are really very close to natural speech. Audio by native speakers can actually be accessed from many Arabic and Egyptian videos available on-line, so, a serious learner will sort out the difference. Thanks a lot for your comment, such comments really help improving the services in the website!
