Arabic videos

Salaams,

Great idea with the videos with concurrent subtitles. I am studying Modern Standard Arabic and would love to see more videos with conversational dialogue. I think cartoons/kids programmes would probably be more on my level!

Asad

Is anyone playing AoC here?

I mean Age of Conan, of course )

I love the videos with both

I love the videos with both Arabic and English subtitles! But it would be great if the subtitles could be downloaded together with the video, then I could also study it while not connected to the internet. Is that somehow possible? Thanks so much!

glad you like the videos!

glad you like the videos! offering them for download is quite difficult though because we use the videos from Youtube and other websites, so actually we don't have a copyright on them.

The lessons

The lessons at this site are fabulous! Both the Modern Standard Arabic and the Egyptian Arabic. One small complaint - the audio is a little messy and hard to make out sometimes. But even so, this is a terrific site.

Thanks for your encouraging

Thanks for your encouraging comment, the audio quality will be significantly improved in the next couple of months

Which songs are in MSA (or very close), can lyrics be enhanced

مرحبا

Excellent site, thank you very much!

I wonder, if there are any songs sung in Modern Standard Arabic or almost, if there are any.

If the songs are in Egyptian and Levantine Arabic, could some info be provided as to what words are different from standard or written Arabic in a the lyrics? I mean not just pronunciation (q dropping or replacing J with G in Egyptian but using of completely different words).

Can some lyrics be enhanced to provide the vocabulary?

It's not a criticism but some colloquial words are harder to find in dictionaries.

شكرا جزيلا
Anatoli

مرحبا Anatoli, ÄThaks

مرحبا Anatoli,
ÄThaks for the comment. It is definatelz a constructive suggestion, I appreciate it so much! it is going to be incorporated in the next version of ArEg
As to now there're 7 songs:
2 Modern Standard Arabic:
أعطِنِي النَايَ وَ غَنِّي
يَا عَاقِدَ الحَاجِبَين

the remaining 5 songs are in the Egyptian dialect. Actually you can use the literal translation as a quick dictionary because words are mostly translated in the same order. Of course this is not going to provide all possible meanings of a given word, however, literal translation must be enough to understand the meaning of the word within the context of the song.

shokran,
Mohamed

Thank you

Thank you, Mohamed.

Somehow I have a problem using my account, so I missed your reply. My account is my name - Anatoli.

I will use your suggested 2 songs. An would also appreciate some small dictionary comparing Egyptian to MSA words and some grammar points.

I am joining others, we need more songs! Dalida, Nancy Ajram, Amr Diab. Natacha Atlas, etc.

On this Russian web-site there are some Amr Diab's songs, some lyrics are also available but no analyis.

www . arabic . ru / hear / modern / diab

This guy has done an amazing job too:
egyptianarabiccourse . blogspot . com (No. 8 is my favourite - انت ايه؟ (Nancy Ajram)
His site as well

Mathematics

:), as you know, this mathematics questions are there to stop spammers from overwhelming our feedback forms, I think this is 'arithmatic' though. I hope it doesn't bother you!

Question

I have a question. On your website you write that "ahlen" means "hi" and "marhaba" means "welcome". But on the other Arabic lessons websites I found the opposite: "marhaba" means "hi" and "ahlen" means "welcome". I am confused. What should I say in Arabic? In English "hello" and "welcome" are not necessarily the same. Are they the same in Arabic? I mean, this would sound strange if I enter somebody elses shop and say "welcome" Laughing out loud LOL

Very good site

You're lucky I'm mathematically competent though...:\ Also, I like what you're doing but it would be handy if you could write in the Arabic in the Latin Alphabet too (i know you have on some...) as well as give some pronunciation tips. Even French pronunciation is hard for me, so I think I'll need a hand from the beginning on this...

Road map

Dear All,
I'm really touched because of your encouraging comments. I identified what's missing and am working on making ArEg a more useful and fun place to learn, to have an outlook, let me present you the road map of this website development:
- Audio: it is clear everybody needs audio along with Arabic text, I'm developing a simple flash-based text-to-speech module. The audio will be a concatenation of clear voices represented by each letter. It is not very natural but it is perfect (I believe) if you want to master the way each letter is pronounced.

- More fun: a set of games are being developed to make learning process more interesting and challenging. The first game will focus on teaching the alphabet and pronounciation. More games will allow you to practice what you learn from the lessons (extension to the idea of exercises on verbs).

- Exams and certificates: the lessons for level 1 are almost complete. An exam module will be developed to measure how good you understood and learned the concepts in a given level. On passing the exam successfully, you will be certified for the given level.

- Resources: applets to train you on basic vocabulary will be available.

- Levels 2 & 3: the lessons available on the website so far constitute level 1 knowledge, lessons, exercises, vocabulary applets, maybe games for levels 2 & 3 will be offered.

- Internationalisation: ArEg will be available in as many languages as possible.

I'm getting to implement all these points, slowly but surely. Wish me good luck and post any of your appreciated suggestions.

salaam,
Mohamed

Mohamed Mounir

Hi, My name is Vytenis. I have just found your website, I surfed on it from Wikipedia link. I am interested in learning Arabic, especially Egyptian Arabic, because I go to Egypt on holiday and I love this country Smiling So your website is a great discovery for me. Prior to this I have been learning Masri from Pimsleur language course. I especially enjoyed your translations of several Egyptian songs. I am a big fan of Egyptian singer Mohamed Mounir. Maybe you know where can I find more of his lyrics transliterated and translated word-by-word just like on your site. That would be great to sing along and learn the language at the same time. Thanks again.

Hi Vytenis, I'm glad you

Hi Vytenis,
I'm glad you like ArEg after experiencing these other courses of Arabic. As far as I know, we are the only website providing such 'educational' subtitles for video clips. I realised the videos are quite few, so we are making an update by end of December, after which you will find a lot of such videos, and more!
so check back often, thanks for your feedback!

Mohamed
